Root Canal Treatment (RCT) is a highly common and successful dental procedure designed to save a severely decayed, infected, or damaged tooth instead of extracting it. Despite its reputation, modern root canal therapy is no more uncomfortable than getting a routine filling. Here are the facts you need to know about RCT.
Signs You Might Need a Root Canal
You may require an RCT if the soft tissue inside the tooth (the pulp) containing nerves and blood vessels becomes inflamed or infected. Common symptoms include:
- Severe, throbbing tooth pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure.
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, even after the source is removed.
- Discoloration or darkening of the affected tooth.
- Swelling or tenderness in the gums near the painful tooth.
- A recurring pimple-like bump (abscess) on the gums.
Understanding the Procedure Step-by-Step
A root canal is a straightforward treatment that usually takes one or two visits:
- Local Anesthesia: The dentist numbs the tooth and surrounding area completely, ensuring a pain-free experience.
- Cleaning the Pulp Chamber: An opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access and remove the infected, diseased pulp.
- Shaping & Disinfecting: The root canals are carefully cleaned, shaped, and flushed with antibacterial solutions.
- Filling the Canals: The hollow canals are filled with a biocompatible rubber-like material called gutta-percha and sealed.
- Restoring the Tooth: A temporary or permanent filling is placed. Since a root canal tooth becomes brittle over time, placing a custom dental crown is highly recommended to protect the tooth from fractures and restore full function.
RCT Post-Treatment Care
Some mild sensitivity or soreness is normal for a few days after the procedure and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your permanent crown is fitted.
